The Praetorian Guard (Praetoriani) was a force of bodyguards by Roman Emperors.
The title was already used during the Roman Republic for the guards of Roman generals. The Praetorian Guard (Latin: Praetoriani) was a force of bodyguards used by Roman Emperors. The title was already used during the Roman Republic for the guards of Roman generals, at least since the rise to prominence of the Scipio family around 275 BC. They were distinct from both the Imperial Germanic bodyguard that provided close personal protection for the late Roman emperors, and the personal Iberian bodyguards of Scipio Africanus and Augustus.
