Frog-mouth Helm

The frog-mouth helmet, or Stechhelm, meaning "jousting helmet" in German, was a type of large helmet that appeared around 1400 and lasted until the first quarter of the 16th century. The helmet was primarily used by knights on horseback for tournaments (jousting) rather than on the battlefield.

The frog-mouth analogy arose from the way the ocularium (the slit through which the helmet's wearer could see) resembled a frog's open mouth. During jousting tournaments, the helmet offered greater protection from lances that splintered upon impact with an opponent's armor. Early examples of the Stechhelm were made from a single piece of metal, while earlier helmets had hinged frames that could be disassembled.

Emerging in the 15th and 16th centuries in Germany, the helmet became popular thanks to medieval jousting because it provided incredible eye and neck protection. A popular tournament technique was to raise the head at the last second. This completely obscured the wearer's vision, but protected the eyes from splinters of the spear breaking on armor or shield; the most likely scenario was for the spear to shatter somewhere below the neck.

Our version is handcrafted by expert Italian blacksmiths and craftsmen from carbon steel. The visor can be raised and locked with a pin. The helmet comes with a padded infula for maximum comfort.

This helmet is ideal for combat and buhurt due to the maximum protection it offers, but also for medieval reenactment parades or medieval jousting.

The helmet can be customized in size, finish, and steel thickness (1mm - 1.2mm - 1.5mm - 2mm).
