Great Bascinet Helmet - Knight's Helmet

Great Bascinet Helmet - Knight's Helmet

Armet Helmet / Great Bascinet (Chevalier Helmet)

This armored helmet appeared in the late 14th century, the result of the evolution of the visored bascinet used by medieval heavy cavalry. The Great Bascinet evolved through the elimination of the coif, the lengthening of the coup, and the addition of a fixed or rotating chin strap, often combined with a gorget for neck protection. Later examples featured wider shapes, allowing for greater freedom of movement within the helmet.

From the mid-15th century, this type was gradually joined and then replaced by the Armet, a more compact and lightweight helmet designed to offer better visibility and breathing thanks to its raised, perforated visor. Despite this, some variations of the Great Bascinet, particularly those with a cage visor, continued to be used in tournament combat until the 16th century.

This fully functional and wearable medieval helmet is ideal for both reenactment combat and historical parades. It is entirely handcrafted from carbon steel, according to the ancient artisanal tradition of Italian gunsmiths, with a high level of finish. The interior features adjustable leather padding and a chin strap for comfort and stability during use.
