German Sallet - medieval helmet 2mm steel
German Sallet, medieval helmet, c. 1480, 2 mm steel – Suitable for combat reenactment –
In the 15th century, the combat helmet known as the "sallet" (Schaller) superseded the bascinet, becoming one of the most widely worn helmets across Europe by the middle of the century. This type of helmet appeared in a wide variety of forms and variations—ranging from simple to elaborate, open-faced or visored, with varying degrees of neck protection, etc.—and was particularly popular in Italy (*celata*), Germany, France (*salade*), and England (*sallet*). By the dawn of the Renaissance, this medieval helmet had evolved into the 16th-century burgonet.
This authentic, fully combat-ready reconstruction of a German *sallet* (dating to c. 1480) is crafted from 2 mm steel. It features an extended neck guard and a subtle ridge or comb running along the crown. The edges are rolled (flanged) and decorated with grooves. The rectangular vision slit—approximately 1 to 1.5 cm wide and 14 cm long—provides adequate visibility, while the pointed, forward-extending lower edge of the visor ensures necessary air circulation.
The interior is blackened to protect against corrosion and fitted with an adjustable, padded liner made of black fabric, which is secured by rivets. A sturdy chin strap, fashioned from 2 mm thick brown leather, is equipped with a brass buckle featuring an antique finish.
This late-medieval combat helmet is available in two sizes (M and L).
