Mauritius (Vienna) sword, imperial sword with scabbard, 12th century.

This beautiful medieval sword is a replica of the imperial sword of the Holy Roman Empire. Since it is traced back to Saint Mauritius, it is also known as the sword of Mauritius. This sword is one of the components of the imperial insignia of the Roman-German emperors and kings and was given by the Pope to the new emperor during the coronation ceremonies as a sign of secular power.

The original is now on display in the Secular Treasury of the Hofburg in Vienna.

The reconstruction proposed here has a long double-edged blade that narrows slightly towards the tip and has a groove approximately two-thirds of its length. The blade is not sharp.

The cross-shaped grip ends in a brass Brazilian walnut pommel, which is adorned with a coat of arms with the imperial eagle on one side and the coat of arms of Emperor Otto IV on the other (divided shield with three lions and a halved eagle).

The inscription along the knob reads:

“BENEDETTO TV. Do(minv)S . DE(v)S . QVI. DOCET. MANV(s)+”

(“Blessed be [my] Lord [and] God, who teaches [my] hands [to fight].”

The hilt also has Latin inscriptions on both sides, taken from the Laudes Regiae.

“CHRISTVS VINCIT CHRISTVS REIGNAT CHRISTVS INPERAT”

(“Christ conquers – Christ rules – Christ commands”).

The last part “CHRISTVS · INPERAT” is engraved only on one side of the crossguard.

A wooden scabbard, wrapped in high-quality leather, is included. There are two adjustable rings on the sword sheath which facilitate attachment to the belt.

It should be noted that this medieval sword is not suitable for combat. It is designed as a collector's item or decorative object and is also ideal as a prop, for example to complete your costume.
