Medieval Secret Helmet - Medieval Cervelliere

The cervelliere is one of the oldest and simplest forms of helmet. It appeared in the Middle Ages, between the late 12th and early 13th centuries, and remained in use throughout the Late Middle Ages until well into the Renaissance. This medieval helmet, essentially a simple, fitted skullcap made of iron or steel, could be worn alone, but was generally paired with a mail coif or chainmail.

Towards the end of the 13th century, it was common to wear a cervelliere under a helm during battles or tournaments. Since the visor was often removed during close combat due to the obstruction it caused to vision and breathing, the cervelliere continued to provide effective head protection while offering an optimal field of vision.

Although over time the cervelliere evolved into the bascinet, it never completely disappeared and remained in use throughout the Middle Ages. At the beginning of the modern era, the last variant of this type of helmet was primarily worn by nobles and men-at-arms, who concealed it under an elegant feathered beret or a wide-brimmed hat made of leather or felt, thus combining protection and style. However, the large number of period cervelliers preserved to this day leads historians to believe that they were also occasionally issued to ordinary foot soldiers.

This reconstruction of a medieval cervelliere without a visor, typical of the 13th century, is made of carbon steel, with a choice of thicknesses. The helmet's interior is blackened for enhanced corrosion protection and features an adjustable leather liner secured with rivets. The robust, adjustable leather chinstrap has a steel buckle.

This helmet is fully functional and suitable for reenactment combat, historical reenactments, LARP (Live Action Role-Playing), theatrical performances, and film and television productions. It fits perfectly into Early and Late Medieval settings and is an ideal complement to a European warrior's armor. It also makes an excellent addition to any historical helmet collection.
