Type after H.R. Robinson: Imperial Gallic A Continental classification: Type Weisenau - Nijmegen

Earliest helmet of the Weisenau type, a line that was further developed over more than two centuries up to the 'Niedermörmter' and characterizes today's image of the 'Roman legionnaire'.

The helmet already has simple but pronounced 'eyebrows'. They were typical of the 'Gallic' models of the imperial period and increased stability.

Ear cutouts are also available, but still without the later introduced ear protection plates. The forehead bracket is particularly solid and heavy.

When looking at images of the original, one wonders whether the helmet does not constantly slide down the forehead of the wearer.

Deepeeka's detailed reconstruction of the find from Nijmegen (Netherlands) now proves that the helmet is very balanced overall and is comfortable to wear despite the massive metal bracket.

Dating: Mainly from the end of the 1st century BC to the first half of the 1st century AD. The original was found together with pottery from the time of Emperor Augustus.

Timing therefore appropriate to the Varus battle in the Teutoburg Forest (9 AD)
