Scottish Sword – Culloden Basket-Hilt Sword

An early 18th-century Scottish basket-hilt sword. Many of the brave Highlanders who charged across the fields of Culloden in 1746 to meet their fate carried swords of this type.

This style is characteristic of Scottish basket-hilt swords, featuring flattened and grooved decorative elements, originally produced by the Glasgow Hammermen guild of Scotland.

The design is first attributed to John Simpson, a Freeman of the Glasgow Hammermen, in the 1690s. Another John Simpson later popularized the design while serving as the King's Armourer during the 1730s and 1740s. At the time of the Jacobite Rebellions, this was likely the most common style of sword used throughout the Highlands.

Our replica features a double-edged blade with a fuller and the characteristic decorative steel basket hilt, lined on the inside with traditional red fabric.
