Its design is believed to date back to the Crusades, when knights carried small crosses with sharp points, which they planted in the ground for their daily devotions.

The three fleurs-de-lis symbolize immaculate honor, which refers to the moral qualities of the apostle.

The sword represents the chivalry of James and his martyrdom, as he was beheaded; it can also symbolize, in a way, the use of the sword in the name of Christ. More specifically, it has been the emblem, since the 12th century, of the Order of Santiago, named after the patron saint of Spain, James the Greater.

This cross is also known as the Cross of the Knights of Santiago, as they wore it on their banner and white cloak.
