Viking Sword with Scabbard SK-B

Viking Sword with Scabbard SK-B

Viking Sword with Scabbard, 10th Century, Suitable for Stage Combat, SK-B

Besides the axe, the sword was the most important weapon of the Vikings. This was also reflected in their beliefs. Warriors who fell in battle were only admitted to Valhalla if they had died with a sword in their hand. The Vikings' rich variety of forms in their craftsmanship extended to their swords as well.

Our stage combat-ready replica of a 10th-century Viking sword is the result of our own intensive research and sword-making work. The initial goal was to create a reconstruction that would later serve as a model for the mass production of both a stage combat-ready and a decorative/sharpenable version. We deliberately chose a type of sword that is not often found as a replica. We largely based our design on original artifacts as described in relevant specialist literature. However, we have adapted the blade shape and length, as well as the dimensions of the hilt, to the height of modern people and the requirements of contemporary stage combat.

Typologically, swords of this type are classified as Petersen Type S or Wheeler Type III. The design of the hilt is based on combination type 10, as described by Geibig.

This Viking sword is entirely handcrafted. The forged blade, made of EN45 spring steel, has been oil-hardened and tempered to approximately 48-50 HRC. It features a pronounced fuller, which gives the sword great flexibility and lightness. The blade is forged through to the pommel and riveted at the end of the hilt. The blade tip and edges are blunt and rounded. The crossguard is forged from steel, and the wooden grip is wrapped in leather. Included is a leather-covered wooden scabbard with richly decorated and period-appropriate locket and chape made of silver-plated brass.
