Excalibur is the legendary sword of King Arthur, sometimes said to possess magical powers and often associated with the rightful sovereignty of Britain. The sword became closely linked to Arthurian legend from an early period. In Welsh it is known as Caledfwlch, in Cornish Calesvol, in Breton Kaledvoulc'h, and in Latin Caliburnus.

The history and legend of King Arthur are inseparably connected to this mysterious and magical weapon. As the wizard Merlin proclaimed, only the one capable of drawing the sword from the stone would become king. Arthur knelt before the stone, accomplished the feat, took possession of the sword, and carried it to the cathedral, where he placed it upon the altar. He was then anointed with holy oil and, before all the barons and the people, solemnly swore to be a just king and to uphold truth and justice for the rest of his life.

Over time, history and legend became intertwined, and the tale of King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table, and the magical sword Excalibur have become forever linked.
