It was a very well-organized military force, and they were the fighting troops in all the Crusades. They were in the vanguard during the attack and in the rearguard during the retreat. Throughout the century, they ensured the effective governance of the Latin Kingdom of Constantinople. They paid no taxes or tribute, obeyed only the Pope, and possessed holdings throughout Europe and the Middle East.
