Pillory or sedan, instrument used for the public display of the condemned thus serving as a warning to others not to commit crimes.
In the Middle Ages stood in the market places or at the city entrance in almost all regions of Europe. The pillory was a punishment considered mild, but often became a torture when the victim, with the neck and arms immobilized in the beam, was teased, slapped, burned and mutilated.
