Sutton Hoo Leather Belt

Anglo-Saxon Ceremonial Belt from Sutton Hoo

The archaeological site of Sutton Hoo in East Anglia, England, contains numerous burial mounds—most notably the famous ship burial—from which remarkably well-preserved, precious artifacts dating back to the 7th century were recovered. Among the most renowned finds from this grave are the helmet and the "Great Gold Buckle" of Sutton Hoo, both of which serve as significant examples of Anglo-Saxon craftsmanship.

For the ruling classes among the Anglo-Saxons and other Germanic peoples, costly, elaborately decorated ceremonial belts were essential status symbols and accessories.

This robust belt is inspired by the original historical find from Sutton Hoo. Its solid, intricately designed brass buckle is a faithful replica of the original gold buckle from the ship burial, which is currently housed in the British Museum in London. The buckle consists of three components: an elongated, somewhat egg-shaped plate; a pin attached to a circular plate; and a frame. The pin plate and the frame can move independently of one another. Every part of the buckle is richly ornamented: the main plate is entirely covered with depictions of animals and animal-like creatures—ranging from writhing snakes and intertwined four-legged beasts to stylized bird heads—and is secured to the belt by three semi-circular decorative rivets. The serpentine motifs are echoed on the pin plate and on two additional metal plates attached to the leather strap, while the buckle frame is adorned with delicate interlaced patterns. This strap, measuring approximately 4 cm in width and 3 mm in thickness, is crafted from high-quality cowhide and features 15 rectangular holes to ensure a perfect fit.

This beautiful belt is sure to be a conversation starter at any medieval market, LARP event, or historical reenactment. Not only does it make for a perfect, sophisticated addition to any early medieval outfit, but it is also entirely suitable for everyday use!
