In the past, cutlasses took on a variety of forms, and during the Arab occupation of Spain, there was significant production in Toledo. A selection of these historical cutlasses can be found in the Army Museum (Museo del Ejército) in Madrid.
Its main characteristics are the crossguard, which rises toward the grip on one side and extends down toward the blade on the other, as well as its broad, curved blade. This stylized cutlass displays all of these features and serves as a reminder that Toledo remained an important center for sword production even during the Arab period.
