Medieval Single Ball Mace

Horse flail. A articulated bludgeoning weapon with high impact power, used primarily in Central Europe between the 12th and 15th centuries. Used in close-quarters combat to strike when a lance or sword was no longer available. The handle is made of hardwood, with a leather-threaded grip. A fringed leather cap caps the upper end of the handle, where a metal chain is also attached, connected to an iron ball studded with conical prongs. The pommel features a burnished metal chain to secure the weapon to the wrist during combat.
