Briquet, Napoleonic Saber

The briquet is a close-combat weapon dating back to the Napoleonic Wars. It is a short, slightly curved sword with a gilded hilt, used by most infantry units, including standard bearers and engineers.

The briquet saber was introduced around 1780. Soldiers discovered that bayonets or musket butts were better suited to close-quarters combat, and in 1807 the order was given to abandon the briquet saber. However, some regiments continued to use it until 1815.

The Briquet, a short and easily maneuverable saber, like other weapons of the time, originated during the French Revolution and was later used by Napoleon's infantry, artillery, and grenadiers.
